Recording 4 - Hermione and Andromache, from Euripides’ Andromache – Kate Rayner and Beth Kennedy.
Hermione is the daughter of Helen, married to the son of Achilles, Neoptolemus, who is away in Delphi. Andromache, formerly the wife of Hector, lives in the palace as a slave and a concubine for Neoptolemus; they have had a child, Molossus. Hermione detests Andromache, whom she chooses to suspect of making her infertile, and intends to kill her. But first she has to dislodge Andromache from sanctuary at the shrine of Thetis, the mother of Achilles, which stands just outside the palace, and contains a statue of the sea-nymph.
